Join Michael Hewins,our favourite market gardener, for 2 days of hands-on knowledge, tips and tricks on how to grow truly awesome backyard veggies using organic permaculture techniques.

  • Vegetable garden design, placement and retrofitting
  • Plant + soil relationships
  • Applying strategies for a healthy healthy soil food web in a backyard context
  • Raising great seedlings
  • Preparing garden beds for planting
  • Nutrient cycling at backyard scale – worms, compost, compost teas
  • Making fermented seaweed tea for your garden
  • Developing garden schedules + crop rotations for backyard scale

Michael has a heap of experience in growing many types of annual vegetables in temperate and sub-tropical environments.

He can help you get activated about taking your organic veggie production from zero to hero, using easy and effective nutrient cycling and soil building techniques that complement his years of experience with planting plans to ensure a bountiful harvest.

This class is divided between classroom and garden time, so arrive expecting to get your hands dirty!

You will leave this course with a competent working knowledge of how to either begin or immediately improve your veggie garden, as well as sample seeds and lots of resources.

About your teacher:

Leading you through this weekend will be Michael Hewins. Michael has been a full-time market gardener for a number of years in northern NSW as well as spearheading market garden projects at Milkwood Farm in Mudgee and Common2Us in Sydney.

The great thing about Michael’s growing experience is that it’s incredibly varied – he’s worked in a variety of climates and soils. He’s grown organic veggies as a self-employed grower, and within a larger enterprise.

In this course it is Michael’s mission to make sure that you leave with solid learning outcomes, so that you’re ready to make the most of your new knowledge about soils, seeds, design, crop rotation, growing, harvest and more.

About the venue:

This course is a combination of focussed theory and on-farm learning at Pocket City Farms in Camperdown, Sydney.

A non-profit growing local food using organic growing techniques on rented + unused land, Pocket City Farms are an amazing example of folks using skills + soil to help change our food system. More about the venue and how to get there…

Your course fee includes:

Comprehensive post-course e-resources, as well as organic tea, coffee and fruit throughout the day. For lunch, there’s an onsite kiosk serving up farm-fresh lunches, or many other eateries nearby.
