This one-day course is for everyone who wants to grow organic fruit + nut trees in small spaces – whether in the city or your backyard – and still get a bumper harvest.
Growing some of your own fruit and nuts is a great way to diversify your family’s diet, increase your home food security, and support local pollinators and biodiversity. And it’s fun, too.
By the end of this course you’ll know how to plant, care for, prune and harvest your very own urban orchard.
Taught by our favourite tree + botanical expert, you’ll be ready to go home, plan out what fruit trees you’re going to grow where, source your trees + support species, get it all growing and get ready for picking day.
In this workshop you’ll learn all about:
- The benefits of perennial plants
- Which species to choose for small space growing
- Fruit tree purchasing, planting / maintenance / care / harvesting tips
- The basics of pruning for different tree types
- Strategies for maximising yield in small spaces
- Espaliering + spindle pruning
- How to multi-graft different varieties onto the one tree
- How to plant an productive micro forest garden
By the end of this workshop you will:
Have a good working understanding of the tree as an ecosystem, and be able to identify which fruit trees are best for which sorts of urban situations
Learn how to plant, maintain + harvest many types of fruit tree, and you’ll have a good understanding of the nutrients + needs of an isolated fruit tree.
Have an overview of espalier and spindle techniques, as well as a working knowledge of pruning techniques for different tree types.
Understand the main fruit tree diseases and how to prevent +/or treat them, the concept of a microforest garden, and you’ll know how to design one that’s just right for your place.
About your teacher:
Brendan Morse trained as an ecologist-botanist. His passion for all things wild has inspired a journey through landscaping, tour guiding, bush regeneration, reforestation, horticulture and environmental education.
When he’s not educating at CERES in Melbourne or teaching folks to grow their own food with Milkwood, he tends a suburban oasis of veges, herbs, honey bees, chooks, mushrooms and fruit trees with his extended family in Melbourne’s inner north.

Your workshop includes take home and online resources for orchard design and planning, as well as some garden helpers to get you growing.
We also provide tea + coffee and organic fruit throughout the day.
About the venue:
This course will be held in the workshop space adjoining the 107 Rooftop Garden in Redfern, Sydney.
The 107 Rooftop Garden is an inner-city food system full of vertical gardens, intensive veggie beds, aquaponics, beehives, dappled shady nooks and lots of hands-on opportunities to learn and grow good things. More about the venue here…
