Perhaps you can tell at a glance why I am so excited by this photo? I’ll tell you. We have a humanure compost toilet system built on wheelie bins. We love it. But the place we want to use the finished, composted humanure is over the hill from the toilet block.
At the moment, we’re loading full wheelie bins of humanure onto the back of the Milkwood truck and shipping it over the hill. It works as a system, but it isn’t ideal. Maybe these wheelie bin trailers will hold the answer!
It might well be that one of these contraptions (designed to transporting wheelie bins of rubbish I imagine) would be a much better idea for our wheelie bin humanure toilets than our current plan that involves winches and skids to crank wheelie bins up onto the truck.
What a great idea! I’m excited.

Gobar Gas! Where is your methane generator? Ontario, Canada farmers actually collect methane, and use huge diesel inspired generators to pump electricity back into the grid at peak times for biggest cash rewards. Slurries form this process are then applied to fields as fertilizer – all manures can be added in? Anybody know? Anaerobic digesters appear to be fairly large affairs, and stationary, with piping for moving the manures, methane and slurries. Read the book “SMART” study this acronym hard, think long plan, consult, and search the net for all endeavors then build yourselves a simple “hands-free” system that lets… Read more »
er, we’re not doing biogas digestors at this point, we’re using the humanure compost on tree plantings instead, cause that’s what we need at this point in our farm’s development: more nutrient and trace elements! Horses for courses!
Bloody ingenious as far as I’m concerned…LOVE the use of the wheelie bin and I’m sure with a little thought you’ll come up with a perfect solution. Bruce@ as far as I know it goes against all organic practices and even conventional practices to use humanure in/on fields in Canada and most other countries in the world. Trees, shrubs, flowers sure knock your socks off but edible crops its a no go. If that is in fact what you were speaking of, or where you speaking of cows etc. But even then I’d would suspect a composting of whatever the… Read more »
Our garbage bin has always just been taken up the road on the towball of the car. Simple and effortless but not pretty if it falls over. All about the driving!
@maggie: These people are using Human Manure Compost, not raw sewage. Composting is a natural, living process which normalises… almost anything organic!!! to be used as fertiliser
(Human raw sewage is not considered safe anywhere, as it contains pathogens which do/can live in the human digestive system)
Also, if someone wants to offer you the tech/time to put in a biodigestor… that would be grrrreat!!!
Yes this is a system using properly composted humanure, we wouldn’t dream of using anything else. Have a look at the above linked posts that explain the system. It’s all there.
Actually (i just read it) human raw sewage is used to grow about 10% of the Worlds food, in the poorest areas. If used something like 1 week before planting there is little or no risk of contamination of the actual food crop. Urine can be used as a replacement for water AND fertilizer, and is basically salt and water and stuff. With proper care this a safe.
I imagine composting provide much more available source of nutrients to plants, but I have no idea!
